and Inclusion

International IUSSI statement

The International Union for the Study of Social Insects (IUSSI) is committed to fostering a global scientific community that embraces equality, diversity, and inclusion. We recognise that diverse perspectives drive innovation, enrich our understanding of social insect biology, and strengthen the collective impact of our work.

We welcome and support the participation of all individuals—regardless of age, race, ethnicity, nationality, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, physical ability, socioeconomic background, religion, or belief system—across all aspects of our society’s activities. We are dedicated to creating an environment in which all members, collaborators, and participants feel respected, valued, and empowered.

We recognise that, both historically and today, researchers from privileged communities may have studied social insects through ‘helicopter’ or ‘parachute science’. We commit to ending such practices and developing respectful and equitable collaborations, to support social insect researchers in less privileged communities and regions.

The IUSSI aims to reduce barriers to access and ensure equitable opportunities in scientific research, education, mentorship, and leadership. Through inclusive practices, proactive outreach, and open dialogue, we strive to make our society reflective of the diversity found both within the communities we serve and the organisms we study.

We recognise that achieving these goals is an ongoing effort and commit to regularly reviewing our policies, practices, and culture to uphold the principles of equality, diversity, and inclusion at every level of our organisation.

Widening access & inclusion fundraising in our section

As part of our commitment to widening access, our section sponsors one student or early career researcher from underrepresented communities, or from low and middle income countries (as defined by the World Bank), to attend the International Congress held every four years.

You can support this initiative by ordering our Social Insects Trump cards game (£12/€14 + Postage & Packing), developed  Prof. Elva Robinson and her lab group:
